Author Guidelines

Submission guidelines:

  • Each issue of the Journal may have a different theme and it is expected that potential contributors will write to the identified theme. As such, potential contributors must submit their papers by the deadline indicated. Only under exceptional circumstances will late submissions be considered.
  • Submissions must be written in a professional yet accessible style that will be appealing to the diverse apprenticeship community, including representatives from the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA), Sector Councils, provincial and/or territorial government apprenticeship authorities, business, employer and labour associations, and international apprenticeship bodies.
  • Papers may be submitted in English or French. The final version will be published in both English and French.  
  • Papers must be submitted in MS Word files in Times New Roman font in 12 pt type.
  • Papers must be double-spaced and margins should be normal (1.25 on left and right).
  • Papers should range between 2,500 to 5,000 words, and should include an abstract of approximately 100 words.
  • All URL addresses in the text must be activated and ready to click.
  • Authors are responsible for obtaining the necessary permission from copyright owners to reproduce an illustration, graph, chart, table, picture or quote over 100 words in length. 
  • Any accompanying photos should be high resolution It is at the Editorial Board’s discretion to use any/all of the accompanying photos.

Additional guidelines for research articles:

  • Findings and analysis by qualified scholars and researchers may be based on quantitative and/or qualitative research in apprenticeship topics of national, as well as international and provincial, significance.
  • Manuscript content must be supported by relevant literature and research, and accurately referenced according to the Humanities/Notes and Bibliography citation style of the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) or Turabian style. Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  2. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  3. The text uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.

The copyright for articles in the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal is retained by the author(s), with first publication rights granted to the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal, if the article has not been previously published. By virtue of their publication in this open access Journal, articles are free for use with proper citation to both the author(s) and the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal for educational and other non-commercial uses.

Those wishing to reproduce all or part of any material published in the Journal are asked to acknowledge the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal.

The submission of a manuscript to the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal will be taken to mean that the author understands and agrees to the following:

  • If the article has been previously published, permission has been secured to submit the article for consideration by the Editorial Board of the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal;
